BHSU HealthCORE

One of the most significant and pressing challenges facing the health care industry in the U.S., and around the world, is the growing shortage of qualified health care providers. That’s why Baptist Health Sciences University created HealthCORE, a community outreach program that reaches out to middle school, high school and college students to show them what a health care career can look like and, more importantly, how they can see themselves becoming a health care professional.

Launched in 2022, the HealthCORE program includes single day events for aspiring health professionals, youth summer camps, mentoring, tutoring, shadowing opportunities, and other support for students and adults throughout the Mid-South. The “CORE” in “HealthCORE” stands for community outreach, one-on-one mentoring, real-life experiences and educational support, all of which are designed to get students interested in a career in health care. Baptist physicians, nurses and other professionals volunteer their time to mentor, educate and share their knowledge of the health care industry, what it means to be a health care professional, and how to prepare educationally for a career in health or even medical school.

HealthCORE also includes two popular annual events that bring hundreds of middle and high school and college students together to learn about health care careers:

• Black Men in White Coats, an annual day-long event focused on building more diversity in health care and providing students with the opportunity to explore careers in medicine. Learn more here.
• SHE Leads the Way, a special event designed to motivate girls and young women and introduce them to opportunities in the world of Science and Health care through Empowerment.
