Childbirth Classes and Education: Baptist Jackson

You can approach your child's birth with more confidence when you know what to expect during your hospital stay and your journey through labor, delivery, and recovery. That’s why The Birthplace developed a three-part childbirth education program called "Learning at Baptist.” A tour of The Birthplace is offered after the second session. Additional classes for newborn care and breastfeeding are available via Microsoft Teams which is a free download to your personal computer or phone. 

All classes are free to parents delivering at Baptist.

Online Maternity Classes and Education

Mississippi Baptist Medical Center offers anytime, anywhere parent education powered by YoMingo®, an education program designed to give you convenient access to valuable information. It includes the tools and support you need at every stage.

YoMingo gives you access to:

  • Evidence-based information on prenatal care, labor & birth, postpartum, breastfeeding, and newborn care including lots of videos
  • Information specific to your arrival and stay at Baptist Medical Center
  • List of available classes and support groups
  • Kick counter, contraction timer, personal journal, feeding log, immunization log, and other tools

This education powered by YoMingo is available on any device with an internet connection and also as a mobile app called myYoMingo. It also comes in multiple languages.

Learning at Baptist

This class includes an overview about what to bring and where to come when labor begins, medication and anesthesia options, and more. There also will be time to ask questions in person about labor and delivery. If you have already experienced childbirth, you may wish to participate in this class to become familiar with our facility and processes.

Additional Childbirth Classes

The below classes with the exception will be held via Microsoft Teams.

Online registration is available with a valid email address for all the following classes. You are required to enter your Baptist Patient ID#, provided during preadmission to The Birthplace, to complete online registration for these classes. If you do not have a valid email address, you may register by calling 601-948-6262.

  • Online registration closes three days before each class, and class sizes are limited.
  • We reserve the right to cancel a class due to low participation. You will receive notification via email if a class is cancelled.
  • Download Microsoft Teams on your phone, iPad, or laptop/PC. Instructions are in your pre-admission packet.
  • Complete registration for all members of your party to ensure a Microsoft Teams invitation.

Newborn Care

This class will be held via Microsoft Teams.

This class will give you updated information on caring for your newborn during your first weeks at home. Topics covered include bathing and skin care, normal newborn behavior, safety, and general feeding instructions.* Suggested items to have on hand for your baby's care will also be discussed. In addition, routine tests and procedures for newborns during their hospital stay will be discussed.

*Note: Couples planning to breastfeed their babies should also participate in the breastfeeding class.

Breastfeeding

This class will be held via Microsoft Teams.

Breastfeeding is the most natural thing in the world for your new baby. So you and your baby can approach breastfeeding on the same terms, maternal newborn educators discuss common concerns and breastfeeding techniques in this single-session program. The advantages of breastfeeding, pumping and storing milk, as well as breastfeeding on a working mother's schedule, are also discussed. Your spouse is encouraged to participate. Please register all members of your party.

Infant CPR

The American Heart Association’s updated Infant CPR Anytime Training Kit contains everything needed to learn the lifesaving skills of infant CPR, choking relief, and injury prevention in about 30 minutes from the comfort of home, work, or in a large community setting. This personal learning program offers an easy and effective training tool for new parents, grandparents, babysitters, nannies, and anyone caring for an infant.

Infant CPR Anytime uses the AHA’s research-proven practice-while-watching method and offers new, modern animated training options. With the Infant CPR Anytime personal training program, students have access to streaming course videos for their specific training needs.

The Infant CPR Anytime Kit is co-branded with the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Natal Fit Water Aerobics

The physical experience of childbirth has been compared to participating in a world-class athletic competition. Mom and baby both win when Mom is in good physical condition. Through water aerobic classes offered by the Baptist Healthplex, expectant mothers can maintain their fitness level, and new mothers can speed the recovery process--safely. Classes are held Monday through Thursday at Baptist Healthplex in Jackson. Participants should attend three classes a week to benefit from this program. A physician and patient release, found in the Natal Fit brochure, must be signed before participating in Natal Fit.
