Postpartum Discharge Instructions

Congratulations on your new baby! As a new mom, you are sure to have many questions about your postpartum (after labor and delivery) care, your recovery, and your new baby. Here are some care instructions for your personal care after giving birth.

When to Call Your Doctor

Please call your doctor immediately if you begin to experience any of these symptoms:

  • Temperature of 100.4° F or higher
  • Heavy bleeding (soaking a sanitary pad in less than an hour) or bright red bleeding
  • Foul-smelling discharge from your vagina
  • Sore nipples or painful areas in the breast
  • Redness around the breast
  • If you have difficulty urinating or have stinging or burning pain when passing urine
  • Severe pain that medication does not relieve
  • Swelling or pain in your episiotomy stitches
  • Swelling, pain or drainage from your C-section incision
  • Swelling, pain or redness occurring anywhere, especially your legs
  • Headaches, vision changes, stomach pain or nausea
