About Thuy
Thuy Huynh is a PGY-2 pharmacy resident at Baptist Cancer Center in Memphis, TN. Her work there has given her a strong foundation in understanding various disease states and identifying cancer cells under the microscope. Her ultimate goal is to work in malignant hematology clinics. Outside of work, she enjoys exploring new cuisines and traveling — she’s halfway to her goal of visiting all 50 U.S. states.
Why did you choose pharmacy as a career?
I chose oncology pharmacy because I believe cancer is one of the most devastating diseases — not only for patients, but also for their families who share in the struggle. Being able to support patients as they navigate the challenges of their diagnosis and treatment is profoundly meaningful and rewarding to me. My passion for this field is also deeply personal, as I lost a family member to lung cancer. That experience strengthened my desire to give back to this patient population and to dedicate my career to improving their care and outcomes.
Why did you choose Baptist?
I chose Baptist because of the meaningful experiences I had here as a student. During my rotations, I was fortunate to work with preceptors who were not only knowledgeable but also incredibly supportive, creating an environment where I felt encouraged to learn and grow. Many of my most impactful teachers are at Baptist.
What is your day like?
My day in the oncology clinic is incredibly rewarding, as I can collaborate with nurses and oncology physicians to ensure that patients receive the appropriate therapies. I truly enjoy helping patients, providing education and ensuring the highest quality of care. I also work closely with the investigational drug service to develop treatment plans for patients who are candidates for clinical trials, contributing to the advancement of innovative cancer therapies. Being part of a multidisciplinary team and supporting patients through their chemotherapy journey has been one of the most meaningful and fulfilling aspects of my residency experience.
What is your favorite thing about Memphis?
I enjoy trying all the different types of food in the restaurants here, spending time in the local parks and going on bike rides. I also value being close to my friends and family, as they keep me grounded and supported while I pursue my career in oncology.
Why would you recommend Baptist to a prospective applicant?
What I love the most about the program, and why I would recommend it to any prospective applicant, is the diverse range of opportunities it offers, specifically in my case in malignant hematology and solid tumor rotations. These experiences will help me build a strong clinical foundation and position me to develop expertise in these complex areas of oncology. I also greatly value the program’s emphasis on mentorship. I am drawn to the supportive culture where preceptors and colleagues are committed to helping residents succeed and providing meaningful opportunities for growth. I believe this program provides us the tools, guidance and encouragement needed to become a skilled and compassionate pharmacist.
