Why did you choose pharmacy as a career?
Wanting to pursue a career in health care and researching different career paths, I concluded that the pharmacy profession most closely aligned with my desires and expectations for a career. I decided to specifically pursue oncology in pharmacy school since the topic piqued my interest. After completing multiple rotations in an oncology setting, I was certain this was the area of pharmacy practice that I wanted to pursue.
Why did you choose Baptist?
Upon completing a PGY-1 at Baptist Memorial Hospital-DeSoto, I decided to continue my pharmacy journey at the Baptist Cancer Center as a PGY-2 oncology resident. I had been granted the opportunity to complete a month-long rotation at the Baptist Cancer Center as a pharmacy student, and I also had the opportunity to complete another month-long rotation with the Baptist Cancer Center as a PGY-1 resident. These two experiences proved to be very rewarding to my development as a pharmacist, and because of these pleasant experiences, I decided to apply for early commitment to Baptist Cancer Center's PGY-2 oncology residency. I was accepted into the program as an early commitment candidate, and my experience under this program has continued to be valuable.
What is your day like?
A typical day as a PGY-2 oncology resident is usually based on the rotation, but my duties range anywhere from performing order verification to interacting with patients and other health care team professionals as a member of a rounding service. When I am not occupied with staffing or rotation-related responsibilities, I use my free time to work on projects and review materials to solidify any recently acquired knowledge.
What is your favorite thing about Memphis?
There are many shops and restaurants that are easily accessible in the Memphis area, which makes living here very convenient.
Why would you recommend Baptist to a prospective applicant?
Throughout both my first and second year of pharmacy residency, Baptist has proved to be an excellent organization to train under due to its knowledgeable staff that has a genuine interest in helping you facilitate your own success as a pharmacist. My preceptors have a sincere interest in supporting me and working with me to ensure I get the most out of my residency training.
