About Alex
Though originally from a small town in northeast Ohio, Alex always wanted to live in the south. So, she moved here to attend pharmacy school and complete her PGY-1 residency training. Her interests include critical care, substance use disorders and pain management. When she is not at the hospital, you can find her walking her dog. She also enjoys reading, going to the gym and cooking new recipes.

Why did you choose Baptist?
I chose Baptist because of the people. I was lucky enough to have three APPE rotations at Baptist DeSoto as a student. I was instantly welcomed to the pharmacy team and treated like family. Also, at my interview for the PGY-1 residency program my residency pharmacy director remembered my interests in pharmacy and my career goals and expressed exactly how he would incorporate them into the residency program, which really made the program stand out to me.

What is your day like?
Every day is slightly different depending on our current learning experience. As I write this, I am on my critical care rotation. I start the day by working up patients, looking into anticoagulation, anti-infective therapy, laboratory values and more. Then I head to our multi-disciplinary ICU rounds and make recommendations to the team, which consists of the intensivist, nurses, dieticians, respiratory therapists, social workers, pharmacists and a chaplain. After rounds, I spend the day completing pharmacokinetic consults such as dosing vancomycin and aminoglycosides, and then either work up a patient or do a topic discussion with my preceptor. The most rewarding part of the day is seeing patients improve clinically during their ICU stay.

What is your favorite thing about Southaven?
My favorite thing about Southaven is the small town feel with big city amenities. We have two large concert venues, tons of restaurants nearby, and lots of shopping. Fun fact, when I was in pharmacy school I lived in downtown Memphis, and I would make the drive to Southaven every other weekend specifically to study at my favorite coffee shop.

Why did you choose pharmacy as a career?
From as long as I can remember, I've always wanted to pursue a career where I could help people. Pharmacy allows me the opportunity to help patients every single day by improving their care through medications. I love the critical thinking and problem-solving that comes along with the pharmacy career.

Why would you recommend Baptist to a prospective applicant?
The pharmacy team at Baptist DeSoto is the most supportive group of people I have had the pleasure of working with. They celebrate my accomplishments and uplift me on difficult days. I know that they want to see me succeed in my post-PGY1 goals and make every effort to help me learn as much as possible.

Why did you choose Baptist?
I originally chose Baptist Desoto because of the variety of learning opportunities, but it was ultimately the incredible people here who truly made it feel like the perfect fit.

My day varies with each rotation, but what makes it truly rewarding is the chance to learn in such a supportive, collaborative environment. I especially love getting to reconnect with my coresidents at the end of the day.

Why did you choose pharmacy as a career?
I was fortunate to work at a local pharmacy after high school. There I saw firsthand the impact a pharmacist can have on the community and the quality of life of others. That experience inspired me to pursue a path where I could make a difference in people’s lives as well.
